FROM THE COACH’S CLIPBOARD
“The best time management skill you will ever learn.”
Time management is a myth. Workshops and seminars offering ‘silver bullet’ solutions are not worth their time and money if it is only about managing time. If you don’t learn to limit and control the events and commitments that create the demand on your time, all your attempts to better steward your time will fail.
Leaders, no matter how educated, talented and passionate, never succeed if they spend their days in a frenzy of activity reacting to crises, or things that are urgent but seldom important. Leaders with the ability to manage themselves and are proactive in managing their workload, see stress decline, productivity soar, and their impact on the organization they serve dramatically increase.
Priorities and planning are the issues when you constantly face pressure, not time. Most leaders don’t need better time management, they need to say no more often. Saying no gracefully to those over you is an art that must be learned. Saying no to your direct support is a leadership style your team will learn to accept if they know it is for their best interests and the team’s overall success.
